I had the pleasure of meeting Raf at the Groen (Green) party headquarters in Brugge, a kind and friendly host who squeezed in a photo shoot with yours truly as I collect the 2018 Brugge mayoral candidates for the 2018 local elections.
Although just 20 and starting his 2nd year of political studies at Gent University, Raf shows a level head and a solid understanding of the policies of his party and Brugge overall.
Raf strikes me as having a good touch for the game of politics, honest and straightforward and compassionate with a smile that could win over the harshest cynic.
Certainly qualities that Belgian politics could use more of, keep up the great work Raf and let that energy fly as you go forward! 🙂

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.
I am Raf Reuse, leader of ‘Groen’ for the municipal elections. I am 20 years old and I study Political Science at Ghent University. In my spare time I like to eat out in the many good Brugge’s restaurants and occasionally I also go quizzing.
Since childhood I am fascinated by politics. I was a big sympathizer of Groen, but I never took the steps to membership. My parents gave me a membership card for Groen as a gift for my 16th birthday. The best gift ever! After that things went fast. I became active at Jong Groen Brugge and was also the chairman for
two years. I got further engaged and almost a year ago I became party leader.
What would you never change in Brugge?
Brugge is a unique city in the world. A place with the allures of a metropolis, but also a village where everyone knows each other. We must preserve that unique combination.
What would you definitely change in Brugge?
Brugge can become much more of a dynamic and progressive city. A city where we embrace innovation and renewal while at the same time meeting the challenges of the 21st century. Moreover, I want to make sure that young people feel more at home in our city.
What is your favorite café and/or restaurant in Brugge?
I really like going to youth hostel Snuffel in the Ezelstraat. I usually go there for drinks.
It is difficult to have a favorite restaurant. There are so many good restaurants here! On the culinary level, we are really spoiled.
Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?
It is obviously impossible to look into the future, but Brugge has the potential to make it happen.
Brugge can look like this within 20 years: a low-traffic center with more space for pedestrians and cyclists. Our shopping streets are bursting with unique trade issues. Re-opened churches and monasteries are new places to live and work. We cherish our local talent. Young people find their way back to our city.
If you didn’t live in Brugge, where would you live and why?
I do not immediately see myself living in another city. I really like Brugge. I never want to leave here.
What are your 3 top priorities as potential Mayor of Brugge in 2018?
A first priority goes to mobility. We want more space for pedestrians and cyclists. If it is up to me, Brugge will become a real cycling city. Public transport can also be much better. Groen has made its own bus plan to improve both accessibility and liveability.
I also continue to work for more greenery in the city. That goes from putting up flower boxes to preserving our nature reserves. I want to preserve our open space as much as possible.
Finally, I want more affordable housing. Every Bruggeling is entitled to a warm home, whether you buy or rent. Addressing unoccupied space, giving new meaning to the released heritage and making more social housing. Make Brugge affordable.
What are the biggest challenges for Brugge as a city?
Climate warming is the biggest challenge of our time, for the whole world and therefore also for Brugge. I advocate an ambitious climate plan. In this way we keep our planet livable for our children.
The youth flight is also a big problem in our city. More and more people of my generation leave Brugge. I want to call this to a halt. More study options, affordable housing and sufficient recreational opportunities keep young people here.
What initiatives do you propose for the small local businesses, as well as the overall growth of beautiful Brugge for the next generation?
Green is a partner for the doers, the people who roll up their sleeves. They must get all opportunities.
Local trade needs to be stimulated even more. After all, our local economy provides employment close to home. Moreover, local products ensure less transport, which is good for the environment. Local buying and short supply trading ensure prosperity for our farmers and the self-employed. Markets and 'neighborhood parties' need to be promoted even more.
We have a lot of talent in Brugge. I want to give entrepreneurs and artists the space to do their thing. That is why I want a new place for all Brugge’s creatives in the Howest site in the Sint-Jorisstraat, which will become available within a few years.

Ik ben Raf Reuse, lijsttrekker van Groen voor de Gemeenteraadsverkiezingen. Ik ben 20 jaar en studeer Politieke Wetenschappen aan de UGent. In mijn vrije tijd ga ik graag eens uit eten in de vele goede Brugse restaurants en af en toe ga ik ook quizzen.
Sinds jongs af aan ben ik geboeid door politiek. Ik was een meer dan overtuigd sympathisant van Groen, maar zelf zette ik nooit de stap naar lidmaatschap. Mijn ouders gaven mij een lidkaart van Groen cadeau voor mijn 16e verjaardag. Het beste cadeau ooit! En dan ging het snel. Ik werd actief bij Jong Groen Brugge en was ook twee jaar voorzitter. Ook een engagement voor Groen kwam daar bij en bijna een jaar geleden werd ik lijsttrekker.
Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?
Brugge is een unieke stad in de wereld. Een plek met de allures van een wereldstad, maar tegelijk een dorp waar iedereen elkaar kent. Die unieke combinatie moeten we behouden.
Wat zou je zeker veranderen aan Brugge?
Brugge kan nog veel meer een dynamische en progressieve stad worden. Een stad waar we innovatie en vernieuwing omarmen en tegelijkertijd de uitdagingen van de 21e eeuw aangaan. Bovendien wil ik ervoor zorgen dat jongeren zich meer thuis voelen in onze stad.
Wat is je favoriete café en/of restaurant in Brugge?
Ik kom heel graag in jeugdherberg Snuffel in de Ezelstraat. Daar ga ik meestal iets gaan drinken.
Het is moeilijk een favoriet restaurant te hebben. Er zijn zoveel goede restaurants in Brugge! Op culinair vlak zijn we echt wel verwend.
Waar zie je Brugge in 20 jaar?
Het is uiteraard onmogelijk om in de toekomst te kijken, maar Brugge heeft het potentieel om het waar te maken. Brugge kan er binnen 20 jaar zo uit zien: een autoluw centrum met meer ruimte voor voetgangers en fietsers. Onze winkelstraten bruisen door unieke handelszaken. Vrijgekomen kerken en kloosters zijn nieuwe plaatsen om te wonen en te werken. We koesteren ons talent van eigen bodem. Jongeren vinden terug de weg naar onze stad.
Als je niet in Brugge zou wonen, waar dan wel (en waarom)?
Ik zie mezelf niet meteen in een andere stad wonen. Ik hou echt van Brugge. Ik wil hier nooit meer weg.
Wat zijn je 3 top prioriteiten als potentiële Burgemeester van Brugge in 2018?
Een eerste prioriteit gaat uit naar mobiliteit. We willen meer ruimte voor voetgangers en fietsers. Als het aan mij ligt, wordt Brugge een échte fietsstad. Ook het openbaar vervoer kan veel beter. Groen heeft een eigen bussen plan gemaakt om zowel de bereikbaarheid als de leefbaarheid te verbeteren.
Verder ijver ik ook voor meer groen in de stad. Dat gaat van het zetten van een bloembak tot het behouden van onze natuurgebieden. Ik wil onze open ruimte maximaal bewaren.
Ten slotte wil ik meer betaalbare woningen. Elke Bruggeling heeft immers recht op een warme thuis, of je nu koopt of huurt. Leegstand aanpakken, vrijgekomen erfgoed een nieuwe invulling geven en meer sociale woningen maken wonen in Brugge betaalbaar.
Wat zijn de grootste uitdagingen voor Brugge als een stad?
De klimaatopwarming is de grootste uitdaging van deze tijd, voor heel de wereld en dus ook voor Brugge. Ik pleit voor een ambitieus klimaatplan. Op die manier houden we onze planeet leefbaar voor onze kinderen.
Ook de jongeren vlucht is een groot probleem in onze stad. Steeds meer mensen van mijn generatie verlaten Brugge. Ik wil dit een halt toe roepen. Meer studierichtingen, betaalbare woningen en voldoende ontspanningsmogelijkheden houden jongeren hier.
Populaire vraag van het volk : Welke initiatieven stel je voor om zowel de kleine lokale bedrijven, maar alsook de algehele groei van het prachtige Brugge te helpen voor de volgende generatie?
Groen is een partner voor de doeners, de mensen die hun handen uit de mouwen steken. Zij moeten alle kansen krijgen.
Lokaal kopen moet nog meer gestimuleerd worden. Onze lokale economie zorgt immers voor tewerkstelling dicht bij huis. Bovendien zorgen lokale producten voor minder transport, wat goed is voor het milieu. Lokaal kopen en korte keten zorgen voor welvaart voor onze boeren en zelfstandigen. Markten en ‘buurderijen’ moeten nog meer gepromoot worden.
In Brugge hebben we heel veel talent. Ik wil ondernemers en kunstenaars de ruimte geven om hun ding te kunnen doen. Daarom wil ik in de site van Howest in de Sint-Jorisstraat, die binnen een aantal jaar vrijkomt, een nieuwe plek voor alle Brugse creatievelingen.
