As the last-minute "Doe Geweune" party for the Brugge 2018 elections, Jan simply had to be on my list of 2018 Brugge mayoral candidates... Especially as he lives barely 5 minutes from our house in St Kruis. 😉
Kind enough to have us in his home and introduce us to the family on hand (that's a big thing for Belgians, mighty reserved about personal space around here!) before posing for a quick shoot in the living room.

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.
I am Jan Werbrouck, 48 years old, married; father of 2 big daughters; 18 and 21 years old. I am an optimistic bon vivant who is socially engaged. I employed as an engineer at ICO in the ports of Zeebrugge and Antwerp.
And basically a fan of everything that has an engine...
What would you never change in Brugge?
The warmth of the city towards its inhabitants ... Brugge is and must remain cozy, safe and authentic.
What would you definitely change about Brugge?
The parking policy. The mix of public transport, car, bicycle and pedestrian. The vacancy of retail premises.
I hope to see a piece of modern architecture combined with the charm of the old houses. Hopefully with the same warm atmosphere as now ... I like to refer to the atmosphere during the summer months, the Friday nights at the Fish Market.
If you didn’t live in Brugge, where would you live and why?
I have tried to live "in the country", but the call of the city became too big after 10 years.
What are your 3 priorities when you become mayor of Brugge?
The parking policy.
Public transport.
Act up against acidification.
What are the biggest challenges for Brugge?
The search for balanced tourism with regard to its own residents.
A more efficient balance between public transport, cyclists and pedestrians.
A breakthrough in the station dossier.
The traffic infraction on the access roads is also a major challenge, together with the bridges on the ring canal.
What initiatives do you propose to help small local businesses as well as the overall growth of beautiful Brugge for the next generation?
Addressing the vacancy in the city center by supporting startups financially and aggressively.

Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?
De warmte van de stad naar z’n inwoners toe... Brugge is en moet gezellig, veilig en authentiek blijven.
Wat zou je zeker veranderen een Brugge?
Het parkeerbeleid. De mix van openbaar vervoer, auto, fiets en voetganger. De leegstand van winkelpanden.
Ik hoop een stuk moderne architectuur gecombineerd te zien met de charme van de oude huizen. Hopelijk met dezelfde warme sfeer als nu... Ik refereer graag naar de sfeer tijdens de zomer, de vrijdagavond op de vismarkt.
Als je niet in Brugge zou wonen, waar dan wel en waarom?
Ik heb geprobeerd “op de buiten” te wonen, doch de roep naar de stad werd na 10 jaar te groot.
Wat zijn je 3 prioriteiten als je burgemeester van brugge wordt?
Parkeerbeleid, openbaar vervoer, acties tegen de verzuring.
Wat zijn de grootste uitdagingen voor Brugge?
Het zoeken naar evenwichtige oplossingen voor toerisme t.o.v. eigen bewoners.
Een oplossing voor een efficiënte samenhang tussen openbaar vervoer, fietsers en voetgangers.
En natuurlijk een doorbraak in het stadiondossier
Het verkeersinfarct op de toegangswegen is ook een grote uitdaging, samen met de bruggen op de ringvaart,..
Welke initiatieven stel je voor om zowel de kleine lokale bedrijven, maar alsook de algehele groei van het prachtige Brugge te helpen voor de volgende generatie?
De leegstand in de binnenstad tegengaan door startups financieel en degressief te steunen.
