Meeting Stephanie:

I first met Stephanie properly when she contacted me to organize a night out for  the local ladies' group Best Brugge Pittig with my Photo Tour Brugge offering... Which was a blast, over 30 fantastic ladies ripping through Brugge and shooting with a mass of Instax instant film no less! 😀

Since then I see her regularly when I tour past Blackbird cafe boutique and say hey, sometimes when on my own time chatting about Brugge and local life: often about businesses but always a pleasure.

Obviously Mrs Andy & I have passed by for a breakfast. Repeatedly. 😉

Stephanie runs her business (and in 2018 at the time of writing this) her race in the local elections both with light and love and care, from our little chats I can see her being a definite force towards a more beautiful Brugge.

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.

Hi, I am Stéphanie Croes, 30 years old, born in Brugge and living in Brugge and owner of a small business here.

This year I’m participating (for the first time) in the municipal elections list 6 (Open VLD Plus), place 40.

What would you never change about Brugge?

The green ring! It are beautiful as it is, every season.

A beautiful green border that romantically embraces the city center and where, as a Bruggeling, you can find some relaxation.

What would you definitely change about Brugge?

Short term, we have to change the current parking policy in order to make shopping in the city center attractive again for both visitors and local residents. I think the first hour of underground parking should be free of charge. I am also in favor of more 'Shop & Go' zones to increase trade.

I find we must also add more green elements and benches to the Noorzandstraat and Geldmuntstraat. The renovations are finally finished, but the street lacks resting points for both the eye and the body.

What is your favorite café and/or restaurant in Brugge?

In a city like Brugge, where we are so spoiled in terms of gastronomy, that is not an honest question to ask.

Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?

Within 20 years I hope that Brugge will have more of a 'Look & Feel' like other big cities such as Amsterdam - 'hip & young, but without losing charm'. Amsterdam knows how to combine authenticity with innovation. As 'Unesco World Heritage' we sometimes forget that both can go hand in hand without compromising on attractiveness.

For example, I hope that within 20 years the canals (Reitjes) are more part of our daily life with permanent floating pontoons, designated swimming areas, water taxis, lowered ramps and overall more resting places on the water. We should upgrade our parks with BBQ zones, more playgrounds, a sandpit and the possibilities for volleyball and petanque.

If you didn't live in Brugge, where would you live and why?

I do not immediately see myself moving for good, Brugge is and remains my home, but I wouldn’t mind having the experience of living in Amsterdam for a year.

Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?

De vesten! Die zijn prachtig zoals ze zijn, elk seizoen.
Een mooie groene omranding die het stadscentrum romantisch omarmt en waar je als Bruggeling wat verpozing kunt vinden.

Wat zou je zeker veranderen aan Brugge?

Op korte termijn denk ik allereerst aan het huidige parkeerbeleid. Om shoppen in de binnenstad terug aantrekkelijk te maken voor zowel bezoekers als Bruggelingen van de deelgemeenten, moet het eerste uur ondergronds parkeren gratis zijn. Alsook ben ik voorstander van meer ‘shop & go’ zones om de handel te bevorderen.

Daarnaast pleit ik voor het toevoegen van groenelementen en zitbanken aan de Noorzandstraat en Geldmuntstraat … de heraanleg is eindelijk gefinaliseerd maar het ontbreekt de straat aan rustpunten voor zowel het oog als het lichaam.

Wat is je favoriete café en/of restaurant in Brugge?

In een stad als Brugge, waar we zo verwend zijn op het vlak van gastronomie, is dat geen eerlijke vraag om te stellen.

Waar zie je Brugge in 20 jaar?

Binnen 20 jaar hoop ik dat Brugge wat meer de ‘look & feel’ van andere groot steden heeft zoals bijvoorbeeld Amsterdam - ‘hip & jong , zonder charme te verliezen’. Amsterdam weet het authentieke met het vernieuwende te combineren. Als ‘Unesco World Heritage’ vergeten we soms dat beiden óók hand in hand kunnen gaan zonder op aantrekkelijkheid in te boeten.

Zo hoop ik onder andere dat binnen 20 jaar dat de Reien meer deel uitmaken van ons dagelijks leven; er permanente drijvende pontons zijn, afgebakende zwemplaatsen, watertaxi’s , verlaagde wallen én meer rustplaatsen aan het water. Ook opgewaardeerde parken horen bij die visie met BBQ-zones, meer speeltuinen, een zandbank of mogelijkheid tot volleyballen / petanquen in de parken.

Als je niet in Brugge zou wonen, waar dan wel?

Ik zie me niet onmiddellijk voorgoed verhuizen, Brugge is én blijft mijn thuis, mààr wonen in Amsterdam zou ik wel eens een jaar willen ervaren.
