Faces of Brugge - Tom Willems

Meeting Tom:

I first met Tom when I was dropping off my photo tour flyers at the In & Uit tourist info point.

Like many of the staff giving out info to the many visitors to Brugge, Tom's a smart and hardworking fellow who's always happy to talk and share towards a better understanding.

Only makes sense that he'd be in politics, head of the Young Socialists and on the ballot with SP.A both locally and state elections for 2018. Based on our chats about life and politics and "whatever else" in Brugge: I see him as a worthy one.

Keep up the great work Tom, serving the community can be a thankless task and to see you push through with a progressive mind and an ear to listen to others is heartening in the landscape of life... Especially if you factor in Belgian politics! 😉

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.

My name is Tom Willems, I am 27 years old and I live in Sint-Anna. Professionally I work for ‘In & Uit’ (Brugge Plus vzw) as a clerk.

Since elementary school I’ve been a class representative for the ‘Student Council’. At age 15, I joined the ‘ABVV Youth’ and 4 years later the ‘Bruges Young Socialists’, where I am the local chairman.

On May 1st you’ll find me at the Red Rock Rally where I am responsible for the terrain. For the sp.a party I also have a mandate at ‘Footstep vzw’, a social and sheltered workshop.

In addition to my love for politics and the city, I have a passion for languages, traveling, television series, cycling and football.

What would you never change about Brugge?

A logical answer : The authenticity of the city, and in addition, the event policy, as there is plenty to do throughout the whole year. Even before the start of the year, the events calendar is pretty much full.

And with that, we take the supportive netwerk of the various neigborhoods under account.

The Bruggeling is really spoiled. There is truly something for everyone. We can enjoy top productions at the cultural center and KAAP, there is the Cactus Festival, classical top concerts at the Concertgebouw, the many events of ‘Brugge Plus’ (Kookeet, Light Festival, Cirque Plus, etc.) and many other small festivals such as Vama Veche.

What would you definitely change about Brugge?

We must continue to focus on the youth. The sp.a and the ‘Young Socialists’ strive to give young people a brighter future by tackling disadvantaged people. Through 'Peer Support' we want better guidance for young people during their school career and during difficult periods in their lives. We must insure work and make living affordable for everyone. We focus on youth work and increase road safety at schools, parks, youth movements and sport centers.

In short, we must invest in young people, because they are the future.

What is your favorite cafĂŠ and/or restaurant in Brugge?

As a socialist, my favorite pub is the ‘Hollandse Vismijn’ on the Fishmarkt. A real people's café where you always meet cool people.

I really enjoy the burgers at ‘Brasserie Gauthierz’. I can’t understand why the Gauthierz burgers has never been nominated for a BoB award (Best of Bruges). Gauthierz also serves the best Mojito.

Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?

Brugge will be a progressive city. A city that is even greener than today, with cozy alternative shopping streets (Ezelstraat, Langestraat, Hoogstraat, etc.). A Brugge where it is interesting for young people to do business and where young artists have a place.

Zeebrugge will revive and become a fine coastal municipality. By establishing cooperation and knowledge platforms, we attract innovative companies and create full-fledged jobs. Bruges has to go there, that is the future.

If you didn't live in Brugge, where would you live and why?

Valencia, without a doubt. It is a tremendously dynamic city where old and new are in harmony with each other. There is a beautiful city park laid out in the old Turia riverbed with sport fields, flower gardens and on the old river mouth lies the modern complex "La cuidad de las artes y ciencias", where art and science meet.
On a culinary level, you are in the "Orange City" and the birthplace of paella. The autonomous region of Valencia is also called "the vegetable garden" of Spain. A fabulous city and region.
