I've met Dirk from the CD&V a couple of times now in passing, mostly at city of Brugge events where I'm collecting event photos and he smiles into the frame or says hello.
As the favorite both in the polls and overall likability, the race is Dirk's to lose... Personally I see him as worthy to win, as the questions I asked him below clearly show: He's aware and cares both of the what's working and what isn't.

Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.
I am dirk De fauw. I am 60 years young. I am a lawyer and I live in Sint-Andries in the Bremlaan 10. I am married to Ann Staelens, a teacher at Vives Hogeschool Brugge, and father of three children, Dieter, Jasper and Bieke, and grandfather of 3 grandchildren, Maxime, Victor and Nina.
I’ve been Municipal Councilor since 1983. I was Public Service Minister from 1994 till 2000, and Deputy of the Province of West-Flanders from 2000 till 2012.
Now I am Minister of Diversity, North-South, and Equal Opportunities. Next to that I operate as OCMW President and I am Chairman of the Social Housing Company ‘Vivendo’ and Director of the Port (MBZ).
What would you never change in Brugge?
The beautiful historic center with its narrow streets, beautiful squares and its fantastic monuments.
What would you definitely change in Brugge?
We need a congress center and an expansion of the museums as soon as possible. Also more space for companies and headquarters.
What is your favorite café and/or restaurant in Brugge?
In the center, ‘Café Vlissinghe’. This is the café where I went to during my secondary studies.
At Sint-Andries, ‘De Vriendschap’(The Friendship), because of its authenticity.
Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?
A city with a port in full expansion, a beautiful new football stadium for Club Brugge, a fully developed business park and a historic center where it is still pleasant to walk and cycle.
If you did not live in Brugge, where would you live (and why)?
I have lived in Brugge all my life and can not imagine any other place. I love to travel, like to visit cities, but no city is as beautiful as Brugge.
What are your 3 top priorities as potential Mayor of Brugge in 2018?
Not much more will happen in 2018.
Top priority 1 : assure that the residents get their confidence again in the city government.
Top priority 2 : the drafting and execution of a strict working plan for roads, with special attention to accessible footpaths and safe cycling paths.
Top priority 3 : a breakthrough in the station -dossier with related to that, the business park and the recreation zone at Sint-Pieters.
What are the biggest challenges for Brugge as a city?
We need to work with a city manager to ensure that there is little or no vacancy in shops in the city center and we need to bring quality shops to Brugge.
Popular people demand: What initiatives do you propose to help small local businesses as well as the overall growth of beautiful Brugge for the next generation?

Gemeenteraadslid sinds 1983, was schepen van openbare werken van 1994- 2000, gedeputeerde van de Provincie West-Vlaanderen van 2000-2012 en nu schepen van diversiteit, Noord-Zuid, en gelijke kansen, tevens OCMW Voorzitter. Ik van voorzitter van de sociale huisvestingsmaatschappij Vivendo en bestuurder van de haven (MBZ).
Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?
Het prachtige historische centrum met zijn smalle straten, mooie pleinen en zijn fantastische monumenten.
Wat zou je zeker veranderen aan Brugge?
Zo spoedig mogelijk een congrescentrum en een uitbreiding van de musea. Meer ruimte voor bedrijven en head-quarters . Wat is je favoriete café en/of restaurant in Brugge? In het centrum, Café Vlissingen, dit is de café waar ik ook tijdens mijn middelbare studies op café ging. Op Sint-Andries, De Vriendschap, omwille van zijn autenticiteit.
Waar zie je Brugge in 20 jaar?
Een stad met een haven in volle expansie, een prachtig nieuw voetbalstadion voor Club, een volgebouwd bedrijventerrein, een historisch centrum waar het nog steeds aangenaam is om te wandelen en te fietsen.
Als je niet in Brugge zou wonen, waar dan wel (en waarom)?
Ik woon reeds mijn hele leven in Brugge en kan mij geen andere plaats voorstellen. Ik ga bijzonder graag op reis, bezoek graag steden maar geen stad is zo mooi als Brugge.
Wat zijn je 3 top prioriteiten als potentiële Burgemeester van Brugge in 2018?
In 2018 zal er niet veel meer kunnen gebeuren.
Topprioriteit 1. is voor mij terug maken dat de bewoners vertrouwen hebben in hun stadsbestuur.
Topprioriteit 2. Is opmaak en naleven van een strikt werkenplan voor wegen met bijzondere aandacht voor toegankelijke voetpaden en veilige fietspaden.
Topprioriteit 3. Een doorbraak in het stadiondossier met daarmee samenhangend, het bedrijventerrein en de recreatiezone op Sint-Pieters
Wat zijn de grootste uitdagingen voor Brugge als een stad?
Met een centrummanager zorgen dat er geen of weinig leegstand komt van handelszaken in de binnenstad en tevens kwaliteitswinkels naar Brugge halen. Populaire vraag van het volk : Welke initiatieven stel je voor om zowel de kleine lokale bedrijven, maar alsook de algehele groei van het prachtige Brugge te helpen voor de volgende generatie?

Voor de grotere bedrijven moeten we bijkomende gronden hebben en op Chartreuse moet er een hoofdkwartierenzone komen.
