I first met Andy a while after starting my Photo Tour Brugge offering, he had started his Your Bruges tour and his tour also meets on the Burg Square.
Fine fellow who knows a ton about Brugge history (or quick to find out when I ask him for help) and we have more than our first names in common: We both love Brugge deeply, not just as local guides for the locations but also as residents (nearby in his case) and members of the community.
Also & next to the base respect I have for any military servicemen, I dig what Andy brings to Brugge with his independent historic walking tours: A bridge to Brugge old and new and a passion to get it right for himself and his guests.
It's the standard that we deserve here in beautiful Brugge, keep up the great work Andy! 🙂
"Faces of Brugge" Home
Please introduce yourself in 2 paragraphs.
I'm Andy, born and raised in Belgium, in the area of Bruges. After graduation I fulfilled my military service, liked it and stayed there. I enjoyed the variety of possibilities in military life, starting with small maintenance work on cars and trucks and then getting the opportunity to become a Paramedic, a job I really liked, especially when I was given -as a new, young sergeant- a new unit in Zeebrugge, where I took the studies of ‘Hyperbaric Medicine, Diving Accidents and Diving Medicine’. One of my tasks was going aboard a naval ship to sail the 7 seas, something I really loved doing.
In 2011, when I became a First Aid Medic, I had the idea (it was already brewing for a couple of years) to become a City Guide in Brugge. I lived there in the past and had always been fascinated by its rich history and culture. I took the guiding classes and survived! No joke, after 3 years of class only 26 of the initial 40 students graduated!
I had only one problem: My sarcasme. It was the only problem teachers had with me. I know my history well, but those little (sometimes not-so-subtile) remarks bugged the teachers. But I passed and started my own one-man enterprise as a private guide. Now, we are 4 years later and I'm pretty proud of what I’ve accomplished. I love bringing the history of Brugge to life through little details, showing the nooks and crannies of the city… My job : Showing the city I love!
What would you never change about Brugge?
Not an easy question... I think, the cobblestones. They are such a integral part of the city that I couldn't even start to imagine what it would be like without them. Thank you Frank Van Acker for that!
What would you definitely change about Brugge?
It wouldn't be a visible thing... Does that count? And it's not even a really Brugge thing, but more a Belgian one : All the red tape.
If you want to try to change something in Brugge, you have to go through such an amount of administration horror that it's discouraging.
Oh, and another thing (if you permit me) I would change the conservative way of thinking. The whole "if it works, we're not changing" thing doesn't go well.
What’s your favorite café and/or restaurant in Brugge?
My favorite places in Bruges are for ice-cream Da Vinci, for food I love Italian so must go for Pasta Presto. And bar... It's strange, but I started to appreciate De Hollandse Vismijn.
Where do you see Brugge in 20 years?
I hope people will still love to visit and revisit our city. What I hope is that (sooner rather than later) ‘Visit Bruges’ (the local tourism office) finally starts seeing what's happening under their noses! The way Brugge was portrayed in the news this year, with the growing rivalry amongst guides, wasn’t great. I’m hoping for a better resolution.

If you didn’t live in Brugge, where would you live and why?
I live in Maldegem, about 16 kilometer from Brugge and I like it there. Actually, I don't want to move any more. I am close to the city. Brugge is only 20 minutes away by car and a bus brings me there in 30 minutes. So, I have all I need close by and I don't have that mass-tourism around me all the time.

Ik ben Andy, geboren en opgegroeid in België, rond Brugge. Na mijn studies vervulde ik mijn militaire dienst, vond het daar leuk en bleef er hangen. Ik genoot vooral van de verscheidene mogelijkheden die het militaire leven me boodt. Ik startte met het klein onderhoud aan auto's en vrachtwagens en toen ik daarna de kans kreeg om paramedicus te worden, greep ik die met volle handen. Dit was een baan die ik echt leuk vond, vooral toen ik -als nieuwe, jonge sergeant- een eenheid in Zeebrugge werd toegewezen, en daar volgde ik dan ook de studies ‘Hyperbare Geneeskunde, Duikongevallen en Duikgeneeskunde’. Eén van mijn taken was aanboorden bij een marineschip en de 7 zeeën bevaren, iets waar ik zeer leuk vond.
In 2011, toen ik een EHBO-medicus werd, had ik het idee (het broeide al een paar jaar) om stadsgids te worden in Brugge. Ik woonde daar vroeger en was altijd al gefascineerd door Brugge’s rijke geschiedenis en cultuur. Ik deed de gids studies en overleefde! Geen grap, na 3 jaar les studeerden er slechts 26 van de initiële 40 studenten af!

Maar ik had één probleem: Mijn sarcastische kijk op de wereld en dit werd zodoende het enige probleem dat de leerkrachten hadden met mij. Ik kende de geschiedenis, maar die kleine (soms niet-zo-subtiele) opmerkingen irriteerden hen. Maar, ik studeerde af en begon mijn eigen éénmanszaak als privé-gids in Brugge. Nu, 4 jaar later, ben ik best trots op wat ik heb bereikt. Ik hou ervan de geschiedenis van Brugge tot leven te brengen via kleine details, de hoekjes en de gaatjes van de stad te tonen... Mijn job : De stad laten zien waar ik van hou!
Wat zou je nooit veranderen aan Brugge?
Moeilijke vraag ... Maar ik denk, de kobbelsteentjes, die zijn zo'n integraal deel van de stad dat ik me niet kan voorstellen hoe het zou zijn zonder. Merci Frank Van Acker!
Wat zou je zeker veranderen aan Brugge?
Het is geen zichtbaar iets ... telt dat? En het is niet eens iets Brugs, maar meer een Belgisch probleem: De administratieve rompslomp. Als je in Brugge verandering wenst, moet je door een administratieve hel gaan, en dat werkt ontmoedigend.
Oh, en nog iets (als je me toestaat), ik zou de conservatieve mindset veranderen. Het concept van "als het werkt, veranderen we niet" werkt niet meer.
Wat is je favoriete café en/of restaurant in Brugge?
Voor ijs ga ik naar ‘Da Vinci’, en voor Italiaans eten gaan we naar ‘Pasta Presto’.
Een bar... Het is raar, maar ik begin ‘De Hollandse Vismijn’ te waarderen.
Waar zie je Brugge in 20 jaar?
Ik hoop dat de mensen Brugge nog steeds bezoeken en blijven terugkomen. Wat ik ook hoop is dat (en dit kan veel vroeger) ‘Visit Bruges’ (het toerisme bureau) eindelijk gaat beseffen wat er gebeurt in hun eigen straten! De manier waarop Brugge dit jaar in het nieuws werd geportretteerd met de groeiende rivaliteit tussen gidsen, dat was niet geweldig. Ik hoop op een betere oplossing.

Als je niet in Brugge woonde, waar zou je dan wonen en waarom?
Ik woon in Maldegem, ongeveer 16 kilometer van Brugge en ik vind het daar leuk. Ik wil eigenlijk niet meer verhuizen. Ik ben dichtbij de stad. Per auto ben ik binnen de 20 minuten in Brugge een bus brengt me er in 30 minuten naartoe. Ik heb alles wat ik nodig heb dicht bij me en ik heb niet altijd dat massatoerisme om me heen.
